For birders who are not familiar with this weekend's NASCAR race traffic problems, this is a reminder that birding in Eastern Sullivan County this Saturday and/or Sunday can be particularly challenging as far as traffic is concerned. There are 2,700 new traffic signs in place and hundreds of city, county and state police officers from Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina working traffic for this weekend's NASCAR race at Bristol. You can easily get caught in traffic backed up for miles and hours even in adjacent counties. Many flow directions are greatly altered. When race traffic is leaving events, you usually find normal routes no longer open with contra flow of all lanes for many miles flowing in the same direction on major highways. You are not able to select on ramps or off ramps in many places as state troopers have closed such routes and put you where they want you to travel no matter where you are headed. Such alterations are in place for many hours. There are no back country roads or city streets you can expect to travel to escape race traffic. Here is the schedules you may wish to avoid: Friday: 9 a.m. Qualifying begins Saturday: 2 p.m. Race Sunday: Main NASCAR Race all day traffic and event
