Having a day camp of 9-13 year olds at Natural Tunnel State Park this week, I have been in EARLY to our creekside interpretive office... Not a bad place for birds and other wildlife. Some intertesting finds this week: screech owl -- 1 barred owl -- 1 kingfisher -- 2 (1m, 1f) blue jays harrassing 1 male red tailed hawk red tailed hawk (same m &a f, they must be nesting nearby as they have been flying in and out calling repeatedly) woodthrush -- 2 whippoorwill -- 1 GBH -- 1 green heron -- 1 goldfinch -- >10 bluebird -- >6 scarlet tanager -- 1m, 1f osprey -- 1, on the Clinch River near Clinchport ruffed grouse -- 1 (scared me BIG time on the way to a cave) eastern phoebe -- >/= 3 cooper's hawk -- 1 indigo bunting -- 1 black & white warbler -- 1 prairie warbler -- 2 brown thrasher -- 1 turkey vultures -- 7 blue wing teal -- 3 mallards -- 2 towhee -- 4m Also reported in the park but unseen by staff: 2 black bears near the north entrance of NT along Stock Creek, just a few hundred meters from the interpretive center.
