I don't have Sibley but this bird was uniformly brown from beak to tail above and a couple shades lighter below. No streaks. I see the Field Sparrow's nape is paler than it's back. I hope to find them again tomorrow in better light. It was so cloudy and dark this afternoon.

Field Sparrow? Look at the gray adult in Sibley. It flew up out of a brush pile along with some song sparrows and towhees. It had rich brown upper parts with no streaking whatsoever, at least that I could see. It had paler underparts, again with no streaking. No streaking on the wings except a very tiny hint of buffy edge on the greater primary coverts, just barely visible. It had a pale flesh-colored bill the best I could tell. It was a little smaller and chunkier than the song sparrow in the bush near it. I didn't get a good look at the tail but it appeared to be the same color as the upper parts and shorter than the song sparrow's tail.
