I am just now reporting a Northern Bobwhite I heard calling emphatically on Wednesday, May 18, at three different locations around my home in Hampton, Carter Co., TN. The Bobwhite seemed to call most often from two points in some extensively logged-out woodland areas. A stroll along the logging road yielded a glimpse of a bird the size of a Bobwhite, but the bird vanished into dense brush. A few moments later, however, the Bobwhite called from the brushy thicket. I haven't heard any additional Bobwhite calls since May 18. 25 years ago, Northern Bobwhites called all summer long. Since I began birding in 1993, however, I have only heard or seen Bobwhites at home on less than five occasions.
