I had a modest but fun day on Saturday, Sept. 11, for migrant-watching at home in Hampton, Carter Co., TN. I observed Hooded Warbler, Blackburnian Warbler, American Redstart and Common Yellowthroat, as well as Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, Gray Catbirds, Indigo Buntings, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Cedar Waxwings, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, a Red-eyed Vireo, a Belted Kingfisher and numerous Common Nighthawks flying overhead. Between 6-7:30 p.m., Common Nighthawks were almost always in evidence overhead. I also had a busy little Empid species flycatching in a tree. Somewhat unusual was an Eastern Screech-owl calling at about 7 p.m. while the sun still shone brightly. All the warblers I observed kept busy foraging for insects. The Hooded Warbler, in particular, sallied forth numerous times to catch flying insects. Many resident birds â?? Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, White-breasted Nuthatches, Northern Cardinals, Song Sparrows, American Goldfinches, Carolina Wrens and Eastern Towhees â?? made appearances at or near the feeders.
