Mendota Hawk Watch Report for 9/25/06 The weather over the weekend was not conducive to hawk watching, although some venturesome souls were out on Sunday to no avail. Today, the flying weather was much better as the cold front moved on and the sky began to clear. Bob Quillen and Ron Harrington were on site from 9:30 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. We spooked a Broad-winged hawk out of a tree as we trudged up the tower road. The first one by the tower was at 9:57 a.m. The best hour was from 5:00-6:00 p.m. thanks to a flight of 83 BWH which came streaming by at 5:30. The next couple of days may be your best chance to see respectable numbers of Broad-winged hawks as their flights will be passed the tower very soon. The number today is relatively good considering the date. Accipiters, Eagles, and Falcons should continue along at a reasonable pace on into October. 9/25/06 YTD Broad-winged Hawk: 138 3,510 Osprey: 2 13 Cooper's Hawk: 5 18 Northern Harrier: 0 2 Sharp-shinned Hawk: 3 27 Am.
