TN-Birders:

Jeff Wilson nailed his first of six needed species with ease,
this morning, and the second came even easier.

Just 36 minutes and a few hundred yards into Bristol's
2,000-acre Steele Creek Park (Slagle Creek Natural Area),
Park Naturalist Kevin Hamed found the Ol' Coot a Ruffed
Grouse.

One down. Five to go.

"It walked thru the brush, out into the open, and stood
and looked at us," said the luckiest birder alive. "It turned
back, took a few more steps, turned its head for another
look at us, and then flew off into the woods."

Arriving at Musick's Campground, South Holston Lake,
he was even quicker on the trigger.

On the scene just one minute and 11 seconds (1:11) he
spotted four (4) Eared Grebes! Of course it helped that
Larry McDaniel had located the birds before he
arrived and we had a scope set up on them. :-)

To add drama, we had a stopwatch to time how
long it would take him to walk from his car to the scope.

Species number two down. Four to go for the weekend.

Bert Hale, McDaniel and Wallace Coffey were
waiting his arrival at Musick's Campground.

After we had lunch, he made a quick trip over
Holston Mountain to Johnson County and made
a big loop in Shady Valley, hunting a raven.

He is back in Johnson City at this hour and will soon
be headed to his appointed banquet presentation for
the Bristol Bird Club in Abingdon, VA.
