Jacob Socolar reports Golden Eagle (1)

Carvers Gap to Grassy Ridge, Mitchell County, NC

Roan Mountain -- 18 January 2015

Comments: "Large raptor flying not too distant

below the ridgeline, intially on TN side, advancing

very slowly into strong headwind. Bright golden nape

and dull golden bars along upperwing coverts obvious.

Wheeled around and rocketed off in strong tailwind

around the flank of Grassy Ridge and out of sight.

No white in wings or tail obviously visible from above.

1.5 h later (presumably the same individual) seen in

flight fairly high over the notch between Round and

Jane Balds, well on the NC side. No white in tail

visible from below. Lack of obvious white in tail

suggests the bird is at least 1.5 years old, and

possibly (likely?) older."
