At the November Meeting last Tuesday, the Herndon Bird Club
decided to have a field trip a week from tomorrow, Saturday, November 14
to water areas in Sullivan County. We will meet at the Weir Dam on the
S. Holston River at 8 a.m. We'll spend some time walking around Osceola
Island there, go to the overlook at the S. Holston Lake Dam, check out
the beaver pond on Rooty Branch Rd., and check for waterfowl at Musick's
Campground. Primary target birds are waterfowl--hopefully some newly
arrived. The first part of the trip will involve some walking around
Osceola Island--thereafter we will drive to the other spots and get out
to observe. At an appropriate time around noon, we'll break for lunch,
likely to Little Italy on Hwy 421. We'll do some car pooling from the
Weir Dam to the other sites. If you would like to come for only part of
the trip, feel free to use your own car to follow from site to site.
The club's December meeting will be the SECOND Tuesday of
December--December 8--at 7 p.m. in the Science Building at Milligan
College. To get there, come up the entry road into the College, turn
right just past the Gregory Center (on the right) into the parking lot.
The Science Building is straight ahead as you come into the parking
lot. The meeting will be in a room on the right just as you enter the
Science Building.
Agenda items include report on the November field trip, planning the
Club Christmas counts in Elizabethton and Roan Mountain, and planning of
the Christmas Party and the compilation of the Christmas counts.
The presentation for the meeting will be by Ms. Marquette Crockett,
speaking on the work of the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy
(SAHC) .Marquette Crockett is the director for SAHC,
Prior to the meeting, interested attendees will meet for dinner and
socializing at 5:30 p.m. at the Smokehouse BBQ on Hwy 359 Milligan Hwy.
Going from Johnson City or from Elizabethton on U. S. Hwy 321, turn off
(north) on Hwy 359, go left under Hwy 321 and follow Hwy 359--the
Smokehouse BBQ will be on your right almost immediately.
ALL ARE INVITED to the FIELD TRIP, the MEETING AND TO the Smokehouse BBQ
