The Herndon Bird Club will have an AFTERNOON field trip this Saturday, August 30, to Rankin Bottoms for shore birds. Meet at the Johnson City K-Mart at 2:30 p.m. to car pool to Rankin Bottoms. The field trip is held in the afternoon to take advantage of the sunlight direction at that time of day. Spotting scopes will be important and several club members will have scopes that they will share. We will eat at a selected restaurant on the way home and will get back to Johnson City after dark. The water level at Douglas Lake is to be down to nearly 985 ft. by tomorrow and should be lower by Saturday. Several birders have reported reasonable viewing in the past week, and viewing opportunities should improve as the water level drops as Saturday approaches. At this time, the weather prediction for Saturday is "mostly sunny with a 20% chance of rain, high temperature of 92F"

The Herndon Club regular meeting will be Tuesday, September 2, at 7 p.m. in the Science Building at Milligan College in Elizabethton. Come up the entry road into the College, turn right just past the Gregory Center (on the right) into the parking lot. The Science Building is straight ahead as you come into the parking lot. The meeting will be in a room on the right just as you enter the Science Building. Agenda items will include discussion of club participation in the Roan Mountain Fall Naturalist Rally September 5-7 and planning of the club 5-county Fall Bird Count to be held Saturday, September 27. Club members Kim Stroud and Joe McGuiness will have a presentation on the Club's Field Trip to South Carolina which was held in Spring, 2014.

Prior to the meeting, interested attendees will meet for dinner and socializing at 5:30 p.m. at ARBY's on South Roan in Johnson City--across from the ONE STOP store. All are invited to the field trip, to the September Meeting, and to Arby's prior to the September Meeting for dinner.

If you have any questions about the field trip or the club meeting, please send me email or feel free to call me.
