The Great White Heron first found 7 June 2008 during the Elizabethton Summer Bird Count, continues to frequent the Watauga River near the "Fishing Hole" access area. Lisa Tyler and I met a few local family-friendly folks fishing at that spot who pointed us in the right direction for the heron's evening return perching spot (7:30 PM) It was worth the wait. A local resident (Ed) allowed Lisa and I to access his property to get a closer look. We also caught sight of a bear-sized beaver and later, a Summer Tanager. When we returned to the fishing area with the family-friendly folks, I was offered a freshly caught, 14 inch rainbow trout. They even offered to clean it for me. It's no fish tale. But it will be blackened cajun style tomorrow night. The Great White Heron was a life bird for both Lisa and me and cooperated for many photos.
