Area Birders, I was gone this past week to Delaware's Bombay Hook Wildlife Refuge so you had a rest from hearing about the birds in my yard. However, this morning started out great with a GREAT BLUE HERON that flew from the top of the maple tree in the front yard. That's a first. With overcast skies and light rain the passerines were fewer with 27 species recorded. The most interesting of those were a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER, 2 COMMON RAVENS, 1 EASTERN PHOEBE, 3 ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAKS, 1 SUMMER TANAGER, 1 SWAINSON'S THRUSH, 2 WOOD THRUSHES, the first YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER of the season, and the first 20+ YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS of the season. Below is the complete list. By the way Bombay Hook was a treat with hundreds of SNOW and CANADA GEESE, 500+ AMERICAN AVOCETS, BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT HERONS and a huge flock of varied SANDPIPERS. Enjoy the birds, Roger Mayhorn Grundy, VA American Crow 4 American Robin 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 Carolina Wren 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Common Raven 2 Downy Woodpecker 1 Eastern Bluebird 3 Eastern Phoebe 1 Eastern Towhee 4 ( 3 males, 1 female ) European Starling 11 Gray Catbird 1 Great Blue Heron 1 (in the top of the Maple in front yard) House Finch 2 Mourning Dove 8 Northern Cardinal 5 ( 4 males 1 female) (1 male feeding on Giant Ragweed ) Northern Flicker 2 Northern Mockingbird 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 3 (1 immature male) Song Sparrow 2 Summer Tanager 1 Swainson?s Thrush 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 Wood Thrush 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 1 (male) Yellow-rumped Warbler 20+ Chipmunk 6 Eastern Gray Squirrel 4 ************************************************* BRISTOL BIRDS NET LIST This is a regional birding list sponsored by the Bristol Bird Club to facilitate communications between birders and bird clubs of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
