One iPhone app that I haven't seen mentioned in this thread is
BirdsEye. While not a field guide per se (it does have 1-2 photos
per species from VIREO, song and calls, and brief descriptions
written by Kenn Kaufman), it is a nice interface for searching
eBird submissions.

I just returned from a work trip to San Antonio and took an extra
day to do some birding while there. You enter your location and
the app will pull down a list of species that have been reported
to eBird near your location within the last 30 days (or up to 3
years). Click on a species of interest and it displays a map
showing where they were seen. Click on one of the pins on the map
and it will show the list of other species seen there. Worked
great for me and I was able to pick up several target species
this way.

My main complaints are that it doesn't cover Hawai'i and there doesn't
appear to be a way to advance search. For example, even though
it accesses 3 years worth of data, I wasn't able to search for
birds seen around San Antonio during September back in July
when I was planning the trip.

And the big thing that is missing from all of these is a field
checklist for recording species seen while in the field (and
ideally set up to submit to eBird). Need a ClipBird app. :-)

The usual disclaimers apply... I have no financial interest, etc.
