Subject: [blueridgebirders] Green-tailed Towhee ????

I went to the home of Bob Perkins this morning (Feb 14) to search for
the possible Green-tailed Towhee he spotted yesterday. Was there about
all morning with a walk around his neighborhood but could not turn up
the bird. Weather conditions were terrible with lots of wind and blow-
ing snow. Bob's description of what he saw was remarkably accurate and
after talking birds with him this morning I feel he possibly did see a
Green-tailed Towhee. He is a very good birder and knows his birds well,
he has just moved into this area from the coast of NC and was not very
sure how rare a find he had seen. His apartment backs up to a row of
overgrown blackberry bushes and the entire neighbor hood had these briar
tangles as well as several brush piles although it is a very urban setting.
Bob says the bird was an adult and had towhee actions, scratching and paw-
ing the ground under the blackberry bushes.

The first Green-tailed Towhe I ever saw was in the early 60,s in
Elizabethton,
Tenn at the home of Lee Herndon (an avid birder now deceased). He was lucky
enough to catch and band the bird. His backyard was not entirely different
from the area Bob saw his bird. Bob has been alerted to the rarity of this
species in this area and has promised he will phone me as soon as he spots
the bird again. I live only about 10 minutes from Bobs house so it is very
possible I could get there before it leaves. Bob is going to try to get a
picture if the bird does return and I will try also if I get a chane to see
the bird.
