Subject: [blueridgebirders] Burkes Garden, VA
Eric Harrold, his father and I took a trip today (Sun Nov. 23)
into Burkes Garden to enjoy the mild weather pattern we are now
in. We weren't disappointed as we had an excellent raptor day.
We got to see one Rough-legged Hawk hovering and catch a meadow
vole and fly into a nearby tree to enjoy his lunch. We also saw
three Golden Eagles flying around chasing each other similar to
watching Ravens play in the wind. We had 1 Harrier, 1 immature
Red-shouldered Hawk, 6 - 7 Kestrels, 8 - 10 Red-tailed Hawks and
5 Ravens in this pristine mountain valley.
The Rough-legged Hawk was an adult bird with excellent field marks
and great views of the "leg pantaloons". The Golden Eagles were so
close we could see the golden shackles on the neck and upper back.
A very enjoyable day in shirt-sleeve weather in Burkes Garden in
late November!!!
