BAEA EAGLECAM climber Winged Deer 2 Dec 2015 SMALL.jpg
After the weather front cleared the region just before noon,
Wednesday, a crew was able to get back into the field and
continue work on the East Tennessee State University
EagleCam Project to put a camera on the Johnson City nest
over Boone Lake near Winged Deer Park. The cable running
from the road up the ridge to the nest tree has progressed
and, today, a climber was again up to the nest and
has put the camera up. The stalled out front brought 2-4
inches of rainfall into the region Sunday until late morning
Wednesday. The university folks were able to get a Thanksgiving
break in and the camera has arrived from the provider. Eagles,
were distracted hunting for food for a few days as the Watauga River,
South Fork Holston River and smaller tributaries were flooded with
high turbidity and made fish and other aquatic food unavailable.
BAEA perched and hunting SF Holston River during rain and flooding.jpgEagles
mostly perched
together away from
nests during the rain
and sometimes spent
the entire day hunting
in fields and away from
water. This actually
extended the access
days to the Johnson
City nest and work
picked up while the
birds were mostly away.
Thursday brought the
Bluff City pair back to
the nest with much
activity continuing to carry sticks and fuss for long periods
with the nest lining details and more sticks added, especially
to the rim.
Work remains before the ETSU folks are ready to upload
the two eaglecams to the internet and everyone can see it
streamed to their computers.
