Hello Birders! Our field trip to Burke's Garden today was OK but not as good as usual. The weather was a little chilly (30 - 38 degrees), generally cloudy and a little breezy. Most bird numbers were down and a few species missing. But, generally, a worthwhile visit! Participants were Dave and Diana Worley, Tom Hunter, Roy Knispel and John Moyle. We saw 29 species as follows: Canada Goose (18), Wild Turkey (8), Rock Pigeon (6), American Crow (78), Common Raven (6), Belted Kingfisher (2), Blue Jay (7), Mallard (63), Red-tailed Hawk (4), Great Blue Heron (1), American Kestrel (4), Northern Flicker (1), White-crowned Sparrow (8), Bald Eagle (1), Downy Woodpecker (2), Song Sparrow (1), European Starling (3), Red-bellied Woodpecker (2), White-breasted Nuthatch (2), Dark-eyed Junco (50), Tufted Titmouse (1), Carolina Chickadee (2), Carolina Wren (2), Ring-necked Duck (1), Green-winged Teal (12), American Black Duck (2), Red-headed Woodpecker ( 1), American Goldfinch (25), House Sparrow (3). It was an unusually spread out mix with several usual species missing. Numbers of some species were also unusual. I believe the unusually bad weather has had an impact! Our next field trip will be on February 22 in the Reedy Creek Greenbelt in Kingsport. More info later! John Moyle
