A new area (sector) leader for the Bristol Christmas Bird Count was named
Tuesday night at the Bristol Bird Club meeting held at Steele Creek Park. It
was the first change in an area leader on the count in more than a decade.
Rack Cross, one of the region's new and promising talents in birding, will take
over the area in the northwest section of the count circle. It includes
habitat in Washington County, VA north of I-81 and between Abingdon and the
Tennessee stateline in west Bristol.

Cross assumes the area responsiblity of leadership and area compilation from
Bert Hale who retired Tuesday as the regular area leader due to health. Bert,
along with his wife Loraine, have been on the Bristol CBC for 26 consecutive
years since their first count in 1978. The Hales will continue to participate
as conditions permit.

During most of those years they also birded the area with their son Ken,
grandchildren, and Bob Quillen, a loyal and long-time count participant, close
friend and BBC member.

That area party this year will have several new faces as Cross will be joined
by his son Sammy Cross, Don Holt and newcomers Diane Draper, Charlie Parker
and Ellen Parker.

The Bristol Bird Count is the region's oldest, having first been conduted by
Fred M. Jones in 1931. The count's single year total species of 89 in 1998 is
the region's high record.

Richard Lewis will compile the count for his 24th straight year. Wallace
Coffey will be in his area of the count for his 46th consecutive year.

The count has hosted a number of outstanding ornithologists including Dr. James
Van Remsen (authority on the birds of Peru and member of the A.O.U. Check-list
Committee)of the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural History, Dr.
Charles R. Smith of the Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University (former
technical editor of "The Living Bird") and, this year, Dr. Robert Moyle of the
American Museum of Natural History of New York City. Moyle will join his
father, Dr. John Moyle, who for 30 years has been a member of the
international Board of Management for the famous Asa Wright Nature Center and
research area in Trinidad.

The Bristol CBC is set for Sunday, Dec. 26th.

Let's go birding......
