BOBOLINK
I went birding this morning with Dr. Alsop of ETSU in the Conklin =
Community of Washington County, TN. This is beautiful flat agricultural =
land near the Nolichucky River with hayfields and row crops. We listed =
quite a number of birds in a short time, but the highlight of the outing =
was a very good look at a male Bobolink in in the shrubbery of a house =
at the edge of a field and also in the tall grass at the edge of an =
unmowed portion of the field. There were a number of Eastern =
Meadowlarks working the edge of the tall grass also. This is reported =
to be the third consecutive year that Bobolink has been observed in the =
same field and may be an indication of nesting. Dr. Alsop knows of some =
old nesting from Johnson County, TN. The older information is probably =
that summarized in Bird Study in Shady Valley Tennessee 1934-1999, =
(Coffey and Shumate) p. 124.=20

COTTON RAT
This isn't a bird, but I also spotted a Cotton Rat (Sigmodon hispidus) =
in a corner of a hayfield. Anybody ever heard of a Cotton Rat? It is a =
rodent about the size of a Guinea Pig and has a tail shorter than its =
body. It is the first of its kind that I have ever seen. Here is a =
picture that I lifted off of the CDC web site linked below. CDC is =
interested because It is the reservoir of Black Creek Canal virus, a =
hantavirus, but the disease is evidently not a current problem anywhere. =
