Upper Douglas Lake, Cocke & Jefferson county, 3-6 PM, 11/11/10, by canoe
Lake elevation: 966.4 ft.

Scanning a gang of ring-billed gulls at Taylor Bend, we spotted a similarly
shaped & sized grayish bird. We could make out a black bill and it appeared
to have a black belly. It took to flight, heading down the lake, and we both
could clearly see the black belly, solid black bill, white underwings, black
wingtips and tail. We have yet to find anything like it in our guides, or
online. Suggestions, anyone?
We might return to the lake for another look, but hundreds of gulls are
dispersed over many miles from Ten Islands to Dandridge, and viewing from shore
is limited.
