Area Birders, Today my wife and I birded the head of Slate Creek , a deep hollow which has a clear stream flowing through dense Rhododendron, tall Hemlocks and large Beeches. We were looking for a Swainson's warbler, though it is still early. We didn't find the Swainson's, but we did find 5 warbler species. We found our FOS Hooded Warbler, and FOS Ovenbird, two vireo species including our FOS Red-eyed Vireo. Two Broad-winged Hawks were flying near the mountain top calling to each other. We had gone only about a mile or so when we found the road blocked by a large uprooted Hemlock and a couple of smaller trees. A few yards beyond those were a couple more large Hemlocks across the roadway. This destruction was a result of a recent bad storm that had passed through the area. A gas company uses the road so the trees will probably be cleared out shortly.
