Bristol Bird Club members drove thru fog and over long distances Saturday in order to make the 8:30 a.m. walk off of the club's third annual Soup 'n Sparrow field trip at the South Holston Weir Dam. Rick Knight, as always, was the leader of another great birdwalk as the group hiked the trail around Osceola Island between the weirs in the South Fork Holston River. Despite the nippy weather, the sun was out from start to finish and everyone had a great time. A few were on their first ever field trip with the BBC but most had been there and done that down thru the ages. As the 11 o'clock hour drew near, the birders rushed for their cars and were among the very first in line at the South Holston Ruritan clubhouse for their annual Bean and Soup Supper fundraiser which helps send high school students on their way with college scholarships. The next hour was mouth watering with dozens of sassy soups, stews and chili servings. Birders promised to be on the front row again in 2013 for next year's event and several promised their spouses would be there after they returned home with an accounting of the delicious food, including cakes, drinks and everything you can imagine for just $6.00. Some thought the bear chili was a little this or a little that but others loved the delightful sweetness of elk chili. Shrimp scampi was killer good. Venison chili was a vicious delight. Cabbage stew, potatoes and vegetable soups beyond your imagination. We hustled back and forth to the long and crazy tables with hundreds of slices of cakes that had such wild names and weird ingredients you would have had to had a notepad to remember. Birders chowing down and carving out moments of memories. Knight took the group to Washington County Park in Virginia where Mike Sanders demonstrated the automated camera systems which have been watching feeders or nearly two months and captured more than 30 photographs of Brown-headed Nuthatches. Then he unlocked the gate to the closed and secured portion of the park and we all rode down to the lakeshore to see where a research camera is watching over a roadkill deer carcass in order to try and get an estimate of Bald Eagles wintering in the Spring Creek Embayment. Then Rick took birders to Musick's Campground to continue the fieldtrip. What a great day to share with birding friends and a pleasant way to enjoy a Saturday morning birding in January !
