Rankin Wildlife Management Area, Cocke County

Observers: Leslie Gibbens, Don Miller, Michael Sledjeski
Survey method: mostly canoe; also brief time spent on foot
Survey time: approximately 2.5 hours
Site conditions: much of the area still under shallow water but lake levels falling fast; significant mud flats and dry land, some of which is beginning to be covered with emergent vegetation


Recorded late this afternoon and evening (taken from my notes, which probably represent undercounting on some species):

American White Pelican (2);
Double-crested Cormorant (34);
Great Blue Heron (9);
Great Egret (191 + another 15 recorded by Michael for a total of 206);
Little Blue Heron (at least 2);
Black-crowned Night-Heron (6);
Canada Goose (3);
Wood Duck (2);
Mallard (16);
Green-winged Teal (2);
Wild Turkey (5);
Semipalmated Plover;
Killdeer (64);
Lesser Yellowlegs;
Spotted Sandpiper (2);
Sanderling (5 or 6);
Semipalmated Sandpiper (2);
Least Sandpiper (30);
Pectoral Sandpiper (28);
Barn Swallow (16);
Indigo Bunting.
