To see Owen's photos of Thornbridge brewery, click on... http://www.classiccitybrew.com/thornbridge.html Next Thursday (2/14) at 6 PM, Trappeze will be tapping a firkin of Jolly Pumpkin Esbam for Valentines Day. This complex and earthy Belgian-style specialty ale is not even available in bottles yet, so this will be a great opportunity for a sneak-peek. * TWAIN'S WINTER BEER DINNER - FEB. 7 From Uri at Twain's brewpub in Decatur, GA -- "Yes, five more days to sign up for this four course affair, with some exciting beer debuts and awesome culinary treats. Highlights on the beer side include our first foray into "randallization," a mechanism that allows for dry-hopping and imparting other special ingredient flavors. A big kid toy indeed, and we can explain it all on Thursday, as well as enjoy the results. Also, we'll be pouring Captain Stormfield Abbey Ale for the first time - a lighter Belgian brew that should go nicely with (and in) a tasty bowl of mussels. The main course will be a marinated, seared pork chop with apple chutney and polenta cake. The dessert? Do you like ice cream floats? This will be one to remember." Call Twain's at 404-373-0063 for reservations. * ATLANTA CASK ALE TASTING RECAP The 2008 Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting was held last January and showcased 20 traditional cask-conditioned ales. After a morning judging panel, the public sampling session was held 4-7 PM. Everyone was impressed with the flavors and excellent quality of these unique cask homebrews. The energetic Celtic music from Póg was also a hit. It was a special evening centered around unique, flavorful beer. This website, along with our guide to more of Athens' cool, hip pubs (http://www.classiccitybrew.com/athensnew.html), outlines many of the best spots to visit while in Athens for the upcoming Classic City Brew Fest. * BEER STYLE OF THE MONTH GUEUZE is a style of sour/acidic Belgian wheat ales that are fermented without additions of cultured yeast strains. Yeasts and other microbes from the air and wooden fermenting vessels cause a spontaneous fermentation that produces complex notes of acids, fruit and barnyard character (which can be quite pleasant, but an acquired taste). Most Gueuzes are around 5-6 % alcohol by volume (ABV), are golden in color, and have complex aromas of citrus, rhubarb and mild oak. The best examples of the style are quite sour and bottled without pasteurization or additions of sugar. Examples: Cantillon Gueuze, Boon Oude Gueuze, Drei Fonteinen, Hanssens, Lindemans Cuvee Rene. Try one soon at Brick Store in Decatur or Trappeze in Athens. Examples are also available to take home at Green's in Atlanta and Five Points Bottle Shop locations in Athens. * WITTY CLOSING QUOTE "Time flies like an arrow.
