One book that comes to mind is Long Lost by David Morrell. It's abot a man who has to rescue his family from his brother, who has kidnapped them. I'm not going to give too much away, but the ending stuck with me for a very long time.

For science fiction buffs a short but unforgettable collection of short stories is Starburst by Alfred Bester I read it first at 13 on load and spent 7 years finding my own copy.
