I do this all the time. When I moved, somehow the charger got packed in another box. Since it wasn't me who packed the charger, I had no idea what box it was stored in. All my stuff went into a storage locker for about two months. This meant that I had to find another pm user to charge the pm every few days just to make sure I didn't have all my files deleted. By the time I moved and had allmy boxes unpacked, it was a week since the last charge and all files were lost. So it seemed easier to store the files on a sd card which I could access via the computer or my cell phone without worrying about losing the files if something wasn't charged every few days. ----- Original Message ----- From: EVAN REESE To: bookshare-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, November 24, 2009 6:27 AM Subject: [bookshare-discuss] Re: pacmate question I bought a new charger for my unit from Freedom Scientific about a month ago. It cost $55. I don't know whether you need to charge the Pac Mate to install the drivers on it or not. I don't hook it up to my computer. But if you just want to use the braille display on the PC, I don't think you need to install anything on the Pac Mate itself. What I don't understand is why you stopped using it because you couldn't afford the Omni update. I mean, why would the fact that you could not afford the Omni make what you have less useful? Just wondering. I have a pacmate 40 but stopped using it since I could not afford the omni update. I recently movbed and I found the charger and couldn't find the pacmate itself. Then I found the pacmate and have misplaced the charger. My first question is will it cost me an arm and a leg to replace the charger if I go through Freedom Scientific? Is it even worth it to replace the charger when all of my files are stored on memory cards which I transfer between my cell phone and computer. I found the communications cord to the thing and plugged in the braille display just to see what would happen and I got the prompt asking me to insert the pm cd. So now my question becomes if I find the cd, won't I have to figure out a way to charge the pm just to install the drivers once I have inserted the cd into the computer? am i confusing anyon here? I'm planning to use the braille display as a means to assisting me with proofing bookshare titles and just to have braille backup when I'm on the web. Any suggestions or hand holding through this process would be appreciated. Even if it appears that I will have to swuirel away my pennies and buy omni, I will do that if it seems in my best interest to do so. Thanks in advance.
