June 16th

News Wire

Don't forget! June 16th is the day we discuss McCarthyism from the recent and
still controversial past. AS usual, we have selections of an interview with the
author and the famous hearings themselves. Bob Acosta has agreed to lead the
discussion in my absence.

Our book for June is "The Age of Anxiety" (DB 61844). It critically evaluates
Senator McCarthy's character, his rise and fall, and his influence over the
nation. It compares the McCarthy era with John Adams' Alien and Sedition Acts,
Woodrow Wilson's Palmer raids and the civil rights violations of George Bush's
post 911, War against Terrorism.

Haynes Johnson, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of "The Age of Anxiety:
McCarthyism to Terrorism" has published over 15 books, including five
bestsellers. He is a familiar figure on TV.

1950s anticommunist crusades fueled public paranoia and led to government
restrictions. Compares McCarthyism to George W. Bush's war on terrorism. 2005.
