What does this mean? It means that you can find just about any book you want to read, purchase that book at ebooks.google.com, and be reading it -- just like a sighted reader who purchases a book from a bookstore -- immediately! There's a book I have been longing to read ever since I heard the author on "Fresh Air" last winter. I knew that, in the best case, it would probably take the NLS a good year and a half to record and make it available (if they decided to record it at all). I have looked in the "Newly Released" category at BookShare for months and finally requested that the BookShare volunteers add it to their "to do list." A few weeks ago, I got a confirmation message that indicated that the book is included among those they will be working on. Yesterday, I downloaded theGoogle Books app, which is free. I went to the ebooks.google.com web site, searched for and found the book, charged my purchase, and have been reading it with VoiceOver ever since! (It took me all of five minutes to find, pay for, download and begin reading the book!) Yes, I am excited! Since I lost my reading vision decades ago, there has never been an instance of my buying or checking out a book and not having to wait to crack its spine and begin reading. It appears -- dare I believe it? -- that those days are over! Check it out.
