The nice part if BS pays a transcriptionist or CART program, is that they
are pros: first at speed as they use abbreviated contractions like court
reporters so they can do it very quickly, and they spell all the words
correctly. Sorry to say many blind people raised on audio format don't have
excellent spelling abilities. Something I;'ve noticed. Not always true of
course, but often enough that's it's become a soapbox rant topic for me.
(Don't let me get started.) Grin. I want interviews that I can access by
download, not chat rooms that are real time and would require use of instant
messaging kind of stuff that goes natural speed for audio folks would then
be too fast for visual braille. There *are* times when accommodation is
*not* reasonable, and I think chatrooms is one of those. (As a paid
professional advocate for ADA issues in the past, , I'm comfortable saying
that.) However, the interviews are a reasonable request. So what the heck,
after fighting with the county health dept language services today about
providing sign interpreters, this seems minimal. The way BS could get out of
it's own involvement is by saying the interviews and chat rooms are via
Jake's page, Friends of Bookshare, not themselves. However, since Bookshare
email lists advertise it, it could go either way. In any case, I'm just
putting this out there and crossing my fingers.

I think Liz is right . I can still hear enough even with my loss to hear
chat room stuff and audio online, but can imagine how frustrating that
muight be if you could not. Any ideas what we can do or what bookshare can
do to include someone in her situation? It would be a shame to lose
volunteers just because they didn't have complete access to everything. Are
there any programs that would put transcripts online?
