Another Caldecott submitted. Am slowly chipping away at the list, smile. Sylvester and the Magic Pebble By William Steig This is a "Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it" kind of story. Silvester the Donkey loves to collect pebbles, and one day he finds a beautiful red and shiny round one. When he wishes that the rain would stop it miraculously does, and he realizes that the pebble is magical. But... when he is frightened by a lion stalking him, he wishes he was a rock so that the lion wouldn't hurt him. This of course works, but, he can't turn himself back, because well, he can't hold or touch the pebble. So he waits, and of course you will have to read the story to find out how he gets out of it. It was the winner of the 1970 Caldecott Medal and another where the pictures were great and so was the story. Shelley L.
