I would buy one now. Given what we've been told up to this point, my guess
would be that a totally new Book Port would be anywhere from eight months to
a year or more away. Basic engineering (that is, hardware) issues can take
months to move from design to prototype to full-scale manufacturing status.
Moreover, since it's at least safe to assume that Springer Design may very
well continue to be involved in the basic engineering and physical design of
any new BP, I would also guess that APH may have to synchronize their
schedules with Springer. I say this only because, much as I love the BP, I'm
not sure that the economics of the business could support a BP that was
being entirely separated from Springer and there might even be some patent
or other legal issues that might make such a separation difficult or
impossible.

I'm as anxious as anyone to see how the BP continues to evolve and what the
"second generation" unit looks like, but based on my own experience over the
past year and the degree to which the BP has fundamentally altered my
reading habits, I don't think that I'd go without any device for a long
period of time just to be sure I was getting the newest model. Just my two
cents' worth and your mileage may vary.

How long will we have to wait for a totally new bookport, if considering one
today would you wait until then, or would you buy one now.

Larry,
If APH is considering a new version of the BookPort, I would like to
suggest a small slide switch that might be fit into the depressed area at
the top of the unit, maybe between the headphone jack and the usb port or
to the right of the usb port that would be a physical cut off switch. The
current key lock arrangement is fine when just carrying around the unit in
a pocket but if packing in a bag or backpack, the buttons are constantly
being pressed, causing the unit to beep frequently and under the right
circumstances, the unit could be unlocked and all kinds of havoc caused as
buttons were pressed in the bag randomly.
