It's probably a result of the older technology again. When the firmware space is limited and you have to choose between a smart calendar and features for reading, you go with teh features for reading and let the human be a smart calendar.

The only reason I can think of is that if you set it for Saturday you wouldn't have to show up for work. Surely the code could be put in to calculate the day of the week! But I suppose there is always Y3K to worry about.
