I may not be remembering clearly, but I thought it was so you
could query the time while playing a file or get your battery
status or determine the percentage left on your card. In this
latter case, if one has a card dedicated to music, then there is
no way to get statistics from the unit unless the voice can be
heard over a playing file.

Didn't we have a feature implemented recently where the volume of
the system voice was made louder than the volume of the currently
playing MP3 file so that feedback about controls could be given
by the system voice? I am not detecting this increased system
voice volume in Beta 14.
