No, I don't use rechargeable batteries since the experience I had with my 
Road Runner. Your lithium batteries sound very good but here in the UK 
people with visual impairment can purchase Duracell Plus Alkaline batteries 
at a very good price from an organisation called Tapesense.

My guess would be that you might be removing reguar batteries and inserting
rechargeable ones. Like I said, I'm currently using a set of lithiums, and
they are working great.
