_The Girl in the Plain Brown Wrapper_
by John D. MacDonald
read by Robert Penkoff

It had been five years since Travis McGee had last seen Helena Pearson.
He'd done some courier work for her husband, who'd ended up murdered
by criminals who'd hoped to make off with the bulk of his fortune.
Then Trav had helped Helena put herself back together when she feared
she couldn't get on with her life after Nick's death.

Now comes news that Helena herself was dead as a result of cancer, and
her last act was to send a letter to Trav asking him to find out if he
could why her older daughter seemed to want herself dead.

Maurie has tried to kill herself three times so far--once by overdosing
on pills, once by cutting her wrists in a warm bath, and a third time
trying to hang herself using a pair of panty hose as a rope.

Only--people intent on killing themselves don't tend to try more than
two means of committing suicide, and rarely more than one.

So, who in Fort Courtney is messing around with Maurie Pearson Pike's
memory and how, and why do they want to see her dead?

I remember reading this one, again many, many years ago. I was in
college when it came out, and I stood in a corner of the college
bookstore reading it, taking several visits over two or three days to
get it done! Poor Maurie definitely deserved far better than she got!
Well written. It truly grabbed my attention both when I first read it
and again in Petkoff's reading of the book. Well recommended. Got it
from Audible.
