_The Queen of the Tearling_
by Erika Johansen

Kelsea did not remember being with her mother as a small child. After
all, since she was a year old she'd lived with Barty and Carlin Glynn,
who'd raised her as if she were their own--or, at least, almost as if
she'd been their own. Carlin had been her primary teacher, instructing
her in the history of Tear, the land they inhabited, the land that one
day Kelsea was meant to rule. Barty taught her herblore and forestry,
botany and geology. Carlin had been strict; Barty warm and caring.

Yet, when her nineteenth birthday came and the Queen's Guard came to
bring her back to the Keep in New London, Kelsea found it harder to
leave the safety of the Glynn cottage in the forests than she'd
expected. She was going to supplant her Uncle Thomas Raleigh, who'd
ruled as regent for the past seventeen or so years, since his sister
the Queen's death. Kelsea had reason to believe her mother had been
murdered, and she knew that once she came out into the open she, too,
would be hunted by assassins, some undoubtedly sent by her uncle and
others by the Red Queen of Mortense, the kingdom beyond her own.

Could she do it--rule the Tearlings as a true queen rather than as the
weak ruler her mother had been, and free her people of the cruel
tribute agreed to by her mother and uncle in which hundreds of her
people went each year to become slaves in the Red Queen's realm?

That, after all, was the question..

Read this as an e-book. Well written and worth reading.
