Even in Newport, February can have long grey cold wet days.
Most birders who travel to Newport in the winter months visit the same
spots. Mark Hatfield, the Jetty, Boiler Bay. I live here...I visit
those areas...but I look for new locations to explore. There are some
interesting side roads and waysides on each of the east-west highways
leading into Lincoln county. There are National Forest roads that
shelter surprises. There are pocket parks in the cities and towns.
Once I find an interesting area, I go back and visit again and again.
Sometimes there's zilch....sometimes there's an unexpected
treat....but there is always a growing sense of place.
Grab your gear, go out the door, find an unexplored spot or two or
three. Really look at that area, that day...then go back another week
and look again. I suspect that you won't have to travel that far from
home to have a really good day.

I would appreciate learning what others normally do this time of year
to satisfy their appetite for unique (in-state) birding observations
when they are not (deservedly) overwhelmed by the armed occupation of a
beloved wildlife refuge that will (unfortunately) end with the loss of
at least one life.
