I'm not completely sure what Larry was driving at here:
So don't underestimate the Bundys and those like them
but if he meant be careful, since the Bundys and their sympathizers
could still take control of the narrative, I agree.
I've already heard from a couple of people -- one of them anonymous --
who basically accused me of "celebrating" the death of LaVoy Finicum,
just by relaying on the news of the initial arrests. I certainly had no
such inclination or intention, but that's how they perceived it.
There are going to be others who focus on that part of the outcome, who
still think that this was a "peaceful protest" and will consider Mr.
Finicum to be a victim of government oppression. They won't have to look
very far (for example, in the Oregonian's comment section) to find
examples of ghoulish comments.
Also, the Bundyites will have their day(s) in court, and you can be sure
they and their backers will try to make the most of it.
So good to be thinking about the overall message for the long term, and
how this is going to play out in the realm of public opinion/folklore
regarding public lands.
I assume that Portland Audubon will have a press release out soon, which
will hopefully provide a good example of how conservation-oriented
birders can respond to the unfolding events. Meanwhile let's keep
looking for positive ways to show support for the folks who have been
most directly impacted by the armed occupation.
