Hello all,
I am writing to consider attending the ODFW hearing on uplisting the
Marbled Murrelet. This hearing is in response to a request from Portland
Audubon and other groups to change its status from threatened to endangered
under the State Endangered Species Act. This will be the only opportunity
to testify before the commission on this decision. ODFW staff have
produced a strong status report but ODFW staff are not making a formal
recommendation. We would love to flood this room with uplisting supporters.
We want to both pack the room (wear green!) and load up the testimony. We
would be happy to work with people on talking points. If you can come,
please let me know.
Uplisting this species will not be a cure-all but will help by forcing ODFW
to set up survival guidelines for this species and then set up process for
them to work with ODF to develop a state level recovery plan. As a lot of
you know, logging regulations in Oregons' state forests are ineffectual for
protecting murrelets and so an uplisting would be a step in the right
direction.
