I hesitate to bring up the topic of moving OBOL to a different platform, but I
see potential for addressing some concerns that have been brought up and
specifically the HOW in Teresa's question(s).
Slack allows for channels, personal chats and even phone calls to occur on the
FREE version of the platform, though only the first 10,000 messages are
viewable and archived. There is a paid version that the OBA could consider
supporting with more memory.
The channels would allow people to easily choose what conversations they wished
to follow and potentially give a location for specific interests where folks
would be more comfortable speaking, etc.

eBird
Women - Birding
Black, Indigenous, and People of Color - Birding
LGBTQ - Birding
Portland Birders
Audubon/Conservation Issues/Politics/Cats

Channels can be made private (members only invited by other members) to provide
safety and sensitivity, if necessary. The aforementioned channels are merely
suggestions. Any member can add a channel as she/he/they see fit.
Administrators can remove people from individual channels or remove them
permanently from the entire Slack platform.
Kind of radical and maybe a Moderator's nightmare, but since we are talking
about ideas for making the Oregon Birding Community a better place....
