What age have all these sandpipers been? I've assumed they were
immatures,

The implied hypothesis:

-> An unusually productive breeding season is responsible for the high
numbers of Buff-bellied/Baird's/Semipalmated Sandpipers showing up west
of their main migration route.

could be tested by checking if number of juveniles, and
juvenile-to-adult ratios, are up by a corresponding factor, at places
along their usual migration routes where there are systematic shorebird
surveys.
