How do those identifying apps work? Picture scanning, sound recognition for
bird calls, or sort of a standby thing where someone is on duty to look at the
pic and try tell you what it is?

Stay well

  Cool.

Just out of interest, not only does apple have the application for Sasol
e-birds, but also a application called e-trees in South Africa.

  Thanks,

This is a reply to an email I sent this morning after chatting to this woman
on the phone, and it's related to accessibility modifications at botanical
gardens there in Pretoria.

  Dear Jacob

Really great to hear from you. We have established a Tree Route here in the
Garden that is wheelchair friendly and is less than a kilometer in length. It
has 50 single species of indigenous trees to see. The tree Trail guide which
has info about the different trees on the route has been translated into
Braille and big print and the books can be obtained from the Garden Entrance
for a deposit of R20. People can then get the book and just return it after
they have done the trail.

This trail cannot be done without the assistance of a person that can see
because the trees are naturally spaced in an area for more or less a square
kilometer. I attach info about the route for you.

The Garden also has an Enabling Garden which highlights gardening techniques
for people with disabilities. All the signboards has been translated in Braille.

I am still busy with the website page, but you can visit or link SANBI's
website www.sanbi.org and click on Gardens and then Pretoria. You will then be
able to click on Virtual tour and the tree route info is displayed in the
wetland section of the Garden. The Enabling Garden is in the section to the
east of the entrance if you look at the Garden map.

We are organizing a bird walk for blind or partially sighted people on
Saturday 2 April. Please contact Alna Jackson from the Jakaranda Lions Club to
book if you want to join. She is coordinating the Jacaranda Social Club for the
Blind and her number is (012) 350 2320.

Please contact me if you want more info and take care.

  Kind regards

Just trying to forward the prior message, but in case it's a upper/lowercase
letter issue, am including both possible versions of your email address, but if
you then receive it in duplicate, that would be why.

Anyway, see content of prior message below.

  Thanks in advance

  Hi there

I think my mother contacted you regarding the relatively recent adaptations
that were implemented with regard to braille labeling, certain routes around
the gardens, etc. etc.

Anyway, since I belong to 2 local e-mail mailing lists for blind/VI guys, I
would like to send them a bit of information about the various things, and
possibly contact details in case they want to make their own enquiries.

In other words, if you're the right person to speak to about this, could you
maybe give me some details to pass on, etc., and would it be OK for me to pass
this e-mail address etc. on to the mailing lists?

I was also specifically just wondering about the suitability of some of the
routes, etc. for someone who might be both blind and in a wheelchair, etc.?

Also, if there's any of the above info on something like a website/webpage, I
would then also maybe add a link to it to my collection of links on my own
website:

  http://www.blindza.co.za/

  Thanks in advance
