After hearing Leslie's quick video clips and another blind user's podcast saying the checkbox should be unchecked with adjust mic in Skype's tools menu, Options, Audio settings I did some investigating here.
For me the Skype Tools menu, Options, Audio settings the checkbox for allow Skype to adjust the microphone had to always be checked in order for my USB headset mic to work until I investigated a bit more with the Windows Sounds area earlier today. I made some changes to the headset's 'recording' levels and went back to Skype's Tools menu, options, audio settings and unchecked the box that reads allow Skype to adjust the mic and the mic works with Skype calls I make but before the mic did not work for me. Thought some of you might want to know this. Vista Home Premium and old Plantronics USB headset with mic.
