Central Florida News 13, FL, USA Saturday, October 13, 2007 Walking With A Message When you see a person with a white cane crossing an intersection, stop. That's the message dozens of activists promoted on Saturday in Daytona Beach, as a part of White Cane Awareness Month. The white cane law states that drivers must stop - no matter what color the traffic light is - if there's a person walking in the crosswalk with a white cane. On Saturday, Daytona Beach Police officers wrote 13 tickets and 15 warnings to drivers who stopped in the crosswalk at the intersection of Beach Street and International Speedway Boulevard. This is a problem that happens frequently in Volusia County. "Four or five blind people were hit last year in Daytona," said Doug Hall from the Mayors Alliance for Persons with Disabilities. "The light was red, traffic was going. The lady was trying to beat traffic. I flipped over the car," said Steve Williamson, who was hit by a car. Lawmakers in Tallahassee are now considering new legislation that would strengthen laws for the visually impaired. Monday is White Cane Safety Day. Across Central Florida, in cities like Orlando and Daytona Beach, activists will take to the streets again to educate the public about white cane safety awareness. http://www.cfnews13.com/News/Local/2007/10/13/walking_with_a_message.html BlindNews Mailing List Subscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" as subject Unsubscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" as subject Moderator: BlindNews-Moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archive: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind RSS: http://GeoffAndWen.com/BlindNewsRSS.asp More information about RSS feeds will be published shortly.
