San Jose Mercury News - San Jose,CA,USA Saturday, November 03, 2007 Red Bluff city council pays $520,000 to blind former councilman By The Associated Press Article Launched: 11/03/2007 05:35:24 PM PDT RED BLUFF, Calif.-The Red Bluff city council is paying $520,000 settlement to a former councilman who sued the city over access for the disabled. Larry Stevens, who is legally blind, says the city violated his rights under the Americans With Disabilities Act while he was a councilman from 1998 through last year. Stevens is getting only $30,000. The rest of the money goes for attorneys fees and to add wheelchair ramps and doors, signs in Braille, and public records in large print. The city also must fix pedestrian crossings at several streets. City officials say the changes could cost millions of dollars over time. The 61-year-old Stevens says he sued after the city repeatedly failed to act on his complaints or provide him with documents in large print.
