Cambridge Evening News (UK) Wednesday, October 31, 2007 Plea to get funds restored A CHARITY for the blind and visually impaired has pleaded with county councillors to restore its funding. Cambridgeshire County Council decided to cut funding for Camread, which totalled £10,000 last year. The charity fears it may have to abandon the 500 people it helps, including sending 90 volunteers to people's homes to read important documents and letters to them and producing a free audio magazine so they can keep in touch with what is happening around them. Now Camread has presented a petition signed by 227 people to Cambridgeshire County Council. Bill Kirkman, chairman of trustees, said: "Please will the county council look carefully at the requests and comments included in our petition. Please will you take into account the support for our plea shown by many sighted and visually impaired people, by letters and messages already sent to the leader of the council and by many letters in the local press." Coun Shona Johnstone, leader of the council, said funding for adult social care was tight and that £3,000 had been made available to Camread for transition. She said: "We recognise Camread's services and their unique nature, but they were still considered to not be meeting our priorities." http://www.cambridge-news.co.uk/news/region_wide/2007/10/31/2c1bc77f-e7fa-4e57-be84-212dbf413643.lpf BlindNews Mailing List Subscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" as subject Unsubscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" as subject Moderator: BlindNews-Moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archive: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind RSS: http://GeoffAndWen.com/BlindNewsRSS.asp More information about RSS feeds will be published shortly.
