Marathon trek of soldier blinded in Iraq war blast

A MERSEYSIDE soldier blown up and blinded in Iraq is in training for the London
Marathon.

Craig Lundberg was badly injured when he was blown up by a grenade on March 22.

The 21-year-old lance corporal's arm was almost severed, his nose broken and he
lost his left eye and most of his teeth.

Amazingly, Craig, from Aintree, fought on and helped injured colleagues despite
his terrible wounds.

He has amazed doctors with his recovery and is preparing for one of his biggest
challenges.

Next April, Craig will take his place on the starting line at Blackheath with
his uncle and guide Jimmy Cunningham to take part in the largest race of its
kind in the world.

Craig and Jimmy will run past some of the most famous sights in London on a
26.2 mile course.

For six months, Craig will be getting his fitness back to what it was before he
was injured serving with the 2nd Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

He goes to the gym every day and runs with Jimmy, from Netherton, around Walton
Park

Twice a week, he works with personal trainer and ex-Royal Marine Corey Drover
at Total Fitness at Switch Island.

He said: "My grandad's mate wanted to do something, so paid for me to have
sessions with Corey."

Mr Drover, 37, from Walton, said: "If Craig had to run the marathon tomorrow,
he would do it through sheer grit ."

His parents Steve, 41, and Debbie, 45, sister Abi, 14, brother Ryan, 10 and
girlfriend Helen, 19, are amazed by Craig's resilience.

Craig will be raising money for charity St Dunstan's, which helps blind
ex-servicemen and women and the Freddie Fund which Craig and his family set up
to help ex-servicemen and women and their families.
