The Vail Trail, Colorado USA Wednesday, October 10, 2007 Finds from the Vine: 2004 Chapoutier Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Bernardine Rouge - Rhone, France By Jarrett Osborn It's rabbit season. It's duck season. No, it's rabbit season. It's duck season. No, it's baseball season. Amazingly, these are all true here in Colorado in the middle of October, thanks to the Rockies' late-season run. But the first two matter to us, since braised rabbit with mushrooms, or roast duck, and venison or even elk, call for a rich and gamy red wine. Try the 2004 Chapoutier "La Bernardine" Chateauneuf-du-Pape, from the southern Rhone region in France. This hearty blend of 90 percent grenache and 10 percent syrah is an old-world style of wine, with leathery tannins, big dried cherry and berry flavors, strong earth, white pepper and game meats on the finish. After breathing for 15-20 minutes, a lovely floral note and even more dark berry and tobacco flavors come forward. Winemaker, and owner, Michel Chapoutier ages the "La Bernardine" for 12 to 15 months in French oak barrels. The grapes used for this wine come from vines averaging 45 years old, giving the wine a graphite, almost steely characteristic. This wine costs around $40 on the shelf. Michel Chapoutier took over his family's company in 1990, and immediately began its renaissance. By reducing yields in the vineyard, and embracing new technology while eliminating pesticides, he brought his family's 190-year-old winery to the pinnacle of the wine world. Chapoutier's Braille labels, first used in 1996, pay tribute to Monier de la Sizeranne, vineyard owner and the inventor of the first version of abbreviated Braille. - Jarrett Osborn, Riverwalk Wine & Spirits http://www.vailtrail.com/article/20071010/VALLEYLIFE12/71010007 BlindNews Mailing List Subscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" as subject Unsubscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" as subject Moderator: BlindNews-Moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archive: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind RSS: http://GeoffAndWen.com/BlindNewsRSS.asp More information about RSS feeds will be published shortly.
