Independent Online - South Africa Tuesday, October 09, 2007 Early Christmas for South Africa's blind children October 09 2007 at 12:56PM There are an estimated 21 000 blind children in South Africa and on Thursday - World Sight Day - 120 of these children will be treated by private specialists, said the Ophthalmology Society of SA (OSSA). Magda Naude of OSSA said education minister Naledi Pandor would visit the Pretoria Eye Institute to thank nurses and specialists for assisting children with eye defects. "According to global statistics, 50 percent of childhood blindness is avoidable," said Naude. "In an effort to address childhood blindness in South Africa, private ophthalmologists and members of OSSA, recently trained 30 sisters to test children to identify those with vision problems," she said.
