Escambray, Cuba Wednesday, November 14, 2007 Civil Society Rejects US Blockade in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba By Israel Hernández Álvarez The over four-decade US blockade on Cuba is strongly rejected Wednesday in the first Forum of the Civil Society underway in the island's central province of Sancti Spiritus. Layer Ibrahim Elizalde delivered the opening speech of the meeting attended by representatives from local mass and social organizations as well as members of the different associations and religious institutions in the province. UN Votes Against US Blockade Elizalde recalled how the Bush Plan seeks to deprive the island's independence and sovereignty, undermine Cuba's civil society and promote the US intervention in the country. The legal expert also explained why the US siege is considered as an act of economic war. "The US blockade is against the law because it violates international principles when interfering in other countries' internal affairs", he affirmed. Young Yunier Quesada Cartaya took the floor on behalf of the Cuban visually impaired association (ANCI) and explained why he is a victim of the US blockade. "I was born with seven malformations" -he said- "and Cuba was denied the possibility to purchase the drugs I needed. Nevertheless, the Revolution did not abandon me and could manage to buy them in other countries. I found the cure for almost every disorder except for my vision problem, thus I became blind at the age of 16". The young man ratified the efforts made by the Cuban State so that children like himself could be taught to read and write with the Braille system. Yunier currently studies a university career and works in a special school for blind and visually impaired children. http://www.escambray.cu/Eng/Special/Blockade/Bcivisociety0711141201.htm BlindNews Mailing List Subscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "subscribe" as subject Unsubscribe: BlindNews-Request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with "unsubscribe" as subject Moderator: BlindNews-Moderators@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Archive: http://GeoffAndWen.com/blind RSS: http://GeoffAndWen.com/BlindNewsRSS.asp More information about RSS feeds will be published shortly.
